 I experimented a bit with your code last night to see if my idea could
 work and committed that here:
 https://github.com/xnyhps/hexchat/commit/07cb3a192c7d24fa19b1eec33741c39d948562bd.
 Setting up the connection works with it, but handling closed
 sockets/streams properly is still unfinished.

 I changed a couple of things, I wasn't sure why the "local address" is
 communicated to the host and I left it out. It's up to you if you want to
 use my changes, or just look at it for inspiration. :)
