Wow; this is pretty tangled. I find this hard to believe:

Do we have a counting bug?
And this could be a bug:

And this ''might'' show where stuff is going wrong:

manual_total_in_map=32766.
It looks as if, according to this, these destroy cells are never getting
sent at all!
