 I'm not sure if I have the time to do this one on time.
 I already feel like I'm rushing #4548 and #4549 and I'm not satisfied with
 the resulting code.

 This ticket touches code of all the link protocols and generally seems
 much more fragile. I don't want to rush this one.

 I have an idea for an implementation plan, and I'll try to play with it,
 if I have the time when I finish with #4548 and #4549.

 The good thing is that #4549 will give us some TLS certificate
 flexibility, if this ticket does not make it in the final release.
