 I just removed the two functions add_date and add_range, and I got rid of
 the continue.  Thanks!

 How do we proceed with turning this simple Python script into a library
 that can be used by #6232?  In theory, we could start by simply copying
 the parts we need over, but maybe there's a smarter way.
