 I managed to solve the NPE problem using the gradle property mentioned
 here:

 https://issuetracker.google.com/u/0/issues/72872257

 But it fails later on in the build. It looks like it's hit or miss
 depending on the gradle task/plugin. I'm going to close this line of
 testing and move on to another approach.
