Re: Tor and Thunderbird / Mail.app

I tried restarting Mail.app with Vidalia on and Tor disactivated. Mail was still able to access messages.

Is IMAP through SOCKS? I'm just using Privoxy, and not using a SOCKS proxy. I guess that's the problem?

Is SOCKS a solution? I saw there was some issue about it having identifying header information.

If you are using IMAP and you change your proxy settings, you'll have to tell mail to disconnect and reconnect before it goes trough the proxy, or you can quit an relaunch Mail. Also, which proxy setting are you using? SOCKS?

That seems to not be true. Right now Tor is not running, safari shows the privoxy error page, and mail.app is still able to send and receive mail from gmail.

If you setup the proxy server in System Preferences, all native- Apple
applications should use the settings.

Send yourself an email and look at the headers for your IP address.
Alternatively, use tcpdump or wireshark to sniff the connection to see
what leaks.

Just remember that unless you are using pop3s or imaps (that is pop3
over ssl or imap over ssl) the exit node can see your username/ password
in the clear.
