Folks:
On adding elements (footprints) I am told that I should use VIA's for the pins (if it is a pinned element and not a smt). However the section of the document suggests that I do not use VIA's.
An alternative to manually creating each part is to use a script. I have a Perl library and some example scripts at http://www.luciani.org/geda/geda-index.html It can be a lot easier to create a family of parts (or complicated parts) with a script than individually.
