It's never a good idea to reuse source directories for building a new version of any piece of software. It leads to very hard-to-track-down problems (as you see).I removed the directory, unpacked the tgz again and tried again and now it compiles fine. I must have broken the unpacking in the middle (but I don't remember doing that).
