I checked the data sheets; they're 16 mils long and 8 mils wide.  For
comparison, my solder is 20 mils diam.  Yeesh.  OTOH they're the same
trace width as an 0.50mm pitch TQFP.

Anyone want to put together a "challenge kit"?  Two each 0805 through
01005 plus a PCB with both "wide" and "compact" footprints?

Our IPC footprints I think bottom out at 0201. But we do have 3 tier footprints for things like 0201, 0402, 0805, etc. so it would take about 60 seconds to do the board layout (if you skipped the 01005). The 01005 would be very simple to add (search for IPC in pcb/lib/geda.inc) if one had some dimensions with tolerances. The IPC guidelines spell out how to turn the dimensions with tolerances into the 3 tier footprints.
