This isn't the first time I've seen this bite someone from a (Windows?)
background. Observation (in one case) revealed that the assumption was
double-clicking on the item would open it. The current development
version of gEDA now allows that to open up the libraries, but that
feature hasn't yet made it to a released version.
(Do you remember if you tried double-clicking?)

Windows tree-views have little [+] boxes next expandable items, don't
they?
