I have written a very small "unit" that gives my program sound support
using /dev/dsp, unsigned 8 bit data, mixing on the fly, using a seperate
thread to mix/play the sound. I am using it in a small game I have ported
from DOS. (I am not completly finished with it yet).

I could write a "tutorial like" explanation - but I do not know if using
/dev/dsp is considered good practice? The only reason I would find it
relevant is because it is very small. (approx 800 lines with a lot of
comments). Also, I am not completly sure that everything I do is
considered good practice - I had trouble finding good sources for sound
coding under Linux in games. (Which is why I think this code may be good
for a tutorial).

Linux supports the notion of a command line or a shell for the same reason
that only children read books with only pictures in them. Language, be it
English or something else, is the only tool flexible enough to accomplish a
sufficiently broad range of tasks.
