Tor from repositories should listen on ports 9050 and 9051.
Tor in TBB should listen to 9150 and 9151.
Maybe you or your friend (or the Xubuntu-developers) changed the ports
in the configuration?
Have you followed the instructions on the website for adding the
tor-repositories? Look here: https://www.torproject.org/docs/debian.html.en
Have you downloaded TBB from here?

I have installed these two to run in parallel on (normal) Ubuntu, using
the installation instructions on the torproject-site without
encountering any problems at all.
