mathew, we've had a rash of this little problem recently. in the python 
interactive interpreter, if you "import pygame" twice does it work for you?

i'm pretty certain the problem is caused by some confusion from 
ldconfig, but i've been unable to help anyone get it working.

a user on the #pygame irc chatroom named "jpsc" also had this problem 
and i believe was able to get it fixed. i'm not exactly sure who this 
is, and they haven't been in the chatroom since.
