Well, this is not a problem of distros, but of requirement. Word processing 
implies to ways:
a) klyx/LaTeX,  small but not a "traditional" word processor.
b) abiword, staroffice, kword, "huge" for a 1 Gb.

Internet implies an uptodate browser, which implies one of these :
a ) mozilla, huge
b) galleon, which implies lots of gnome libs 
c) lynx, with no graphics...

And for email, well, pine is nice.
