I could use some help with dumb things like organizing different versions of the code on my local machine, keeping track of version numbers, and the proper way to use utilities like diff (I'm missing the man page for some reason!).

I haven't figured out how to get ftp to work with that. I think there's some problem with our nameserver too, but I don't know enough about networking to be sure.

Since Felipe answered most of your concerns let me try to address the ftp issue. Don't use it. Use scp instead. it is much more secure. Just install openssh on your linux box (make sure you enable RSA when you configure it). Roger Dingledine can then help you get a ssh login on the seul machine. I'll help where'er I'm
able for that side of things. You may need to sweet talk you network admin into opening up port 22 in your firewall. Once you have your ssh login we can work towards getting you "authorized" for xarchon.
