I would agree with you. But not at the current state of the game. What element of surprise are you speaking of, when the player can just save the game and restart the map choosing the other side?

knowing exactly what is going to happen adds to the game in the same way that
not knowing exact XP does.

But should "not knowing what is going to happen" be enforced with artificial limits to the ease of obtaining knowledge? Look at The Battle for Wesnoth. It provides you with all the possibly obtainable information, include possible outcomes of battles with the exact percentage of probabilities, and despite this it is definitely not a game which is not a challening or interesting one.
