Initial Comment:
it seems that aclocal.m4 is overriding the --data* and --localedir flags (search for DATADIRNAME). The test says that it was copied from glib; is there a chance that something prior to that was setting DATADIRNAME based on one of the command-line options, such as --localedir?
I added 'DATADIRNAME=share' to the configure command line, but this only seems to affect the install directory - the other configure flags seem to set where the tool looks for the locale files at run time.
