It appears that in x_compselect.c, the only code to change the embedding state of new components is in x_compselect_callback_response() in a code path which only gets executed for a GTK_RESPONSE_APPLY.
As component placing can be done at any stage, perhaps the update should be instantaneous for any newly placed components.
What is the least surprise way to change this?
I'd guess not the current behaviour probably, where you have to hit "Apply" before it takes affect.
NB: This is based purely on looking and grepping at the code (encountered during an unrelated debug session), so there might be magic which makes this work somewhere else.
