So how does 'gnd' become global?  I just grabbed the 'chassis gnd' 
symbol, which appears to have the same attributes as 'gnd', just a 
different netname.  It appears as a bunch of single pin nets.

I'm generating a hierarchical schematic and some power nets I'd like to 
make global for simplicity - although I'm starting to think it's better 
to carry the nets through the  hierachical symbols.
