I always hate to show my ignorance, but... 
I compiled the latest released version yesterday using the default
configuration options, 

version 20081128,...
----- Compile Time Options -----
GUI:
    gtk : Gtk - The Gimp Toolkit
Exporters:
    bom : Exports a Bill of Materials ....

I looked under File->Preferences and don't see anything resembling
bloat / shrink, or preferences for polygons.  Ideas?
