Thanks for the comments. Interesting point you make about slow rising
power supplies. I betcha this will be connected to laptops a lot. Did
the problem tend to happen there?

Well, we only intended this port be used to connect to the EEPROM,
and at that only so it can be given a product id in non-volatile
memory. All the interesting stuff is supposed to go through the USB
and the JTAG ports.

The more stuff like this gets added, the bigger the PCB gets. In my
humble opinion, it would be nice to keep this board tiny.

There's already a 16-signal "hobby port" connected to PB and PC.
