Re: gEDA-user: Installation problem - from source - SuSE 10.0 to

Marvin,

Thanks for the compliment!

I always worry about the ability of the CD to install programs
correctly, particularly on older or strangely configured
systems. I frequently get questions from people who are having
trouble. I provide some suggestions, and the questioners go away.
Therefore, I can't tell if the CD worked for them, or if they just
gave up.

Feedback about the install CD experience is useful to me [1], which is
why I asked Bill about his experiences. It helps me find and repair
bugs preventing the installation of one or another of the programs in
the suite. (FWIW, right now the big problem is GSpiceUI and the
wxWidgets stuff.)

Also, if there are other programs which folks would like to see in the
gEDA Suite CD, please let me know, and I can see about integrating
them. Yes, I have put TkGate and GHDL onto the CD, but not into the
installer. There are fundamental issues with each of those programs
preventing me from installing them easily using my approach [2].
Maybe someday I'll create a binary image of GHDL and stick that on the
CD. I haven't looked at TkGate for a while, so I have no plan for
it.

Stuart

[1] Like that which you gave previously, thank you.

[2] The problem with GHDL is that you must build it along with
building gcc-4.0.3. That is, GHDL is an extension of gcc-4.0.3.
Building gcc-4.0.3 is quite hairy, and will also mess around with the
user's natively installed gcc, unless I do a number of work-arounds.
The work/benefit ratio is accordingly too high for me to include it on
the CD.
