Oh nonono. You're missing the point here, man.
The newbie in question (just like anyone else) will need to figure
out what components he or she can obtain. If your only source of
components is a retail electronics outlet, you'll probably be limited
to 1/4W through-hole resistors. However, others (like me) may use, for
example, 0805-size surface mount resistors almost exclusively. It's
not gschem's responsibility to make that decision.
Schematics are a logical representation of a circuit's ELECTRICAL
topology...not its implementation in the physical world. There's a big
abstraction layer there.
