More accurately, the icon and .desktop files are always installed, this
flag controls whether the installer will attempt to run
update-desktop-database to update the mimetype <-> application
association cache.

Another interesting option:

--with-xdgdatadir=.....

Allows you to set where the icon and .desktop files are installed. If
you install in /usr/local or /usr/bin (distro packagers only please!),
the default of $(PREFIX)/share is good.

For a home-directory install, the icon and menu entry will be picked up
if use /home/<userid>/.local/share/

Unless your install location is on your path for your user account, you
will have to fixup the .desktop file (e.g. installed in
~/.local/share/applications/gerbv.desktop), to contain an absolute path
for its "Exec=gerbv %F"
