If you like to do/use what most people do, you may consider using
Windows OS, Intel CPU and maybe Eagle or KiCAD EDA tools. That is what
most people here in germany do...
Seriously: Most linux distributions should work fine for gEDA. If
package manager does not support it well, you may still compile from
sources. (For gentoo, we have gEDA 1.6.1, pcb 2009 snapshot, latest
gerbv, xgsch2pcb and gnucap in the official tree now.)
