We use deletions to do those too.  You can use negatives if there's
nothing else on the layer, but as soon as you add a single regular
trace, you have to use deletions.

Amusingly enough, the gerber spec tells you to use deletions in one of
their examples.

The 4pcb folks are GREAT.  They worked with me pretty closely when I
was working on the gerber exporter back when I fabbed my boards, and
I've met some of them in person at a local trade show too.

Now if only they'd start expanding their prototyping specials... ;-)
