gEDA-user: a couple of dumb new user questions

Okay, now that I've got gschem working, I've got a couple of questions.
I checked the FAQ but didn't see these:

1. How do I control the default scale? When I start a new document and
drop the first component on it, it's so tiny that it's just a few pixels
across. I have to zoom the view way in to see it. If I save the document
and then re-open it, the single component fills the entire screen and I
have to zoom the view out to see anything else. Is there some way I can
set a more comfortable view level as the default?

2. Is there any way to change the background color?
