You do not need to sacrify flexibility. I wo7uld suggest do attach something like


	MenuFootprint: DIL-14, SO-14

to a symbol, gschem can construct a selection menu fron this list. This menu always can contain an other... entry, which lets the user enter text. Something like the windows combobox could be used, too. You can either select one entry of the list or just type in yor own one, if you ant something else.
