That's exactly what I thought.  PCB is one of those programs where you
*must* use the manual to get anywhere.   And I would have given up
without Bill Wilson's tutorial.

After you learn it, you don't notice the idiosyncrasies as much.  
Therefore, folks who have knowledge to fix the user interface are not
inclined to.

There was a Gtk port.  I don't know the status of it.

Yes. But it's only hard for the first board.  Follow Bill Wilson's
tutorial step-by-step.
