You should really give the error message text and the program and
version which prints the message -- to help the developers to locate the
problem.

stefan@AMD64-X2 ~ $ gschem -v
gEDA/gschem version 1.4.3.20081231

stefan@AMD64-X2 ~ $ cat gEDA/DAD/gafrc 
(component-library "../gschem-sym")
(component-library "../imported-symbols")
stefan@AMD64-X2 ~ $ 

Works fine.
