How about a new friend? Seriously. I'd suggest to look for linux power 
users among your neighbors, colleagues and relatives. Maybe there is a 
local linux user group (LUG) where you live. Choose one of them as guru 
for all linux related topics and stick to his choice of distribution. 
This will make the transition much smoother than if you insist to discover 
all those little tricks yourself, not to mention the traps and pitfalls.
