As you and DJ have suggested, placing a rectangle over the entire board does fill all the empty space so there is no need to etch it away. On the sample I have from my cheap-O toy, the traces look like they have been 'ballooned', making a wider trace. This way there is only one clearance gap between two traces. Think of it as placing a bunch of ballons in a box, then blowing them all up at the same time. That is the concept of what I am looking to do.
