Not wasted effort - being new to Linux, I need to figure out how to 
trouble-shoot from the back end.  I'm not quite sure how to start gchem 
in a new xterminal session - if I try to invoke X from the console, 
(sudo X), I just get "Fatal serer error: Server is already active."  No 
complaints showed up in gschem's log window upon panning around the 
schematic.


Thanks for the prompt help - I'll leave the files up for a couple of 
days for those who are interested.
