That is exactly why there are PPD (PostScript Printer Description) files. They specify everything that is specific to each printer like imagable aera, supported paper formats and other options like duplexing as well as supplying PostScript program fragments to use these features. These fragments have to be included in the PostScript output. When at some later time the file has to be send to a different printer, these printer specific code can easily be identified and replaced by the apropriate code for the printer.
