What I recall from reading about this standard is that it relates to
interchangeability of PCB information with some sort of XML schema
(creating yet another schema).
IMHO, most of the work done with pcb ends up either as gerber files
going to a board house, or as plots on film for photo-etch, or as plots
on glossy for toner transfer, either which ends up in the etch tank.
So are you lobbying for less than 1% of the workflow, going to be
finished elsewhere ?
Unless you happen to know some "open" FEM software for EMC, heat
dissipation, etc. simulations which is _able_ to read the files
generated according to the IPC standard, I'm not interested as of yet.
When and if this IPC standard is finished, somebody who really needs
this functionality can write his/her own exporter based on the standard.
XML should be fairly simple :)

Kind regards,
Bert Timmerman.
