When you use GIMP's eraser tool on a layer that has an alpha channel, it
will erase through, using the alpha channel to show what's behind the layer
(or, if it's the bottom/only layer, the checker-board behind the image).

> just the eraser part got me confused.

Well, ok, do this and see if it works :)

Load GIMP

  gimp &

Request to create a new file. File -> New or CTRL-N.

Accept the defaults (should be an RGB image with Background color for the
fill).

Right-click the image to get the menu. Select Layers -> Add Alpha Channel.

Select the eraser tool.

Scribble with the mouse. You _should_ see checkerboard showing through.

Select File -> Save As. Type "x.png". Make sure the file type is either
"By extension" or "PNG". Click OK.

Accept the default PNG settings in the window that appears. Just click OK.

Close the image (click your window manager's close button, or type CTRL-W
while focused into the image's window).

Now... see if transparency data was kept. Select File -> Open or hit CTRL-O.

Select "x.png" and open it.

Do you see the transparency (checkerboard) on the image?

If not, perhaps you need to install libpng???
