A few months back, I got the 3DfxVodoo3000 and it is great, but 
you have to get the drivers from 3dfx.  I avoided the live card, but
I guess now it might be worth considering....

Only problem is you fast run into the 4 drive limit (1 20G HD, 1 DVD,
1 CD-R/RW, 1 ZIP -- I'm done).

Must be a bug, he must have run the HCF instruction (Halt and Catch
Fire).
Sorry about the crash.  With good drives, they are fairly rare now.
(The WORST drives we ever had were some AV SCSI drives, 100% failure!)
