The limit isn't 4 drives, it's 12. Linux 2.2 can handle 6 IDE controllers,
2.4 will handle 10. The only problem is the additional slots needed for more
IDE controller cards, but if you get a dual IDE card, and have two IDE ports
on the motherboard, you've got 2 controllers for 2 drives (one for each) and
2 more controllers for 4 more IDE devices. Not too bad.
