Well I've done quite a bit. Not much as I had hoped by this time, but
determining the best RAID solution for the / partition and hacking the
kernel to get around a 'undocumented feature' took a lot of time. I feel
so cool now, that's twice in 4 years that I've had to edit the kernel
source to add a feature! OSS just rocks.

Some things I decided is that we're not going to mirror /. It's just way
too ugly to do right now and it has some serious drawbacks should
something blow-up. Instead, we'll just keep a image copy (via dd) of / on
hdb1 and edit a few files (/etc/{lilo.conf,fstab) and we'll have an
excellent backup partition that we can boot off of.

Other than installing the OS, RAID, and the earlier mentioned kernel
patches, I've done a few security things (turning off unneeded daemons)
and compiled ssh 1.2.26.

People should email me their login names and password hash from
/etc/shadow. Core group members will get R accounts (root access) and
access to sudo.

I'm going to start getting MySQL and Apache ready on the system. I assume
we want *everything* under /home? Is there anything else someone wants
to tell me? Jason, about RH SS... is it legal for you to give me a copy
of yours, or should we stick with mod_ssl (I think SS is mod_ssl??). The
one thing I wasn't sure of is if we want the Apache/MySQL binaries in
/usr/local. Makes more sense, just more difficult to configure (but it's
got to be a breeze compared to the RAID thing.)

I hope to move the system to NaviSite this week if I don't end up going
skiing in Tahoe. Otherwise it'll likely have to wait until next. If
people have a need to get access to it sooner, I can probably move it to
the office and give people access to it via our T1.

Anyways, I should go to bed now... not feeling so good the last two days.

Later...

P.S. Jason, when's the next meet?
