I access CVS directly from my home/work computers via fsh/ssh:

CVSROOT=:ext:cvs.linuxkb.org:/home/cvs
CVS_RSH=ssh 

This has worked very well for me for well over a month.

On Vodka, it's set as:

CVSROOT=:pserver:aturner@localhost:/home/cvs

Though I very rarely use that.
