IDE right?  If so, sounds like the master (hda) is having fits.  That
would explain the BIOS not finding both disks.  Time to get a new disk
buddy.  When you plugged in the mic, are you sure you didn't wiggle/touch
the power cord?  If it's loose, that would explain the power problem you
refer too.

My guess is that on of your disks (probably the primary) is flakey which
is preventing your system from reading the partition table on the
secondary.  Try moving hdb to the other IDE channel to isolate the
problem.  Note that doing so will change the device to hdc or hdd in your
/etc/fstab.
