Actually I'm planning on getting a whole new computer when this one
blows.  I was hoping to wait a few months, but maybe I won't.  I'm
thinking a loaded K7....

Forgot to mention:  The other partitions on hdb mount just fine, both
ext2 and HPFS.  It's only /dev/hdb8 and I think hdb9 also.

But nevertheless, something is screwey.  Thanks for the idea....
