I think that anything that makes use of the system easier is going to be
highly valuable in getting a larger userbase.

Having just finished/handed in my 1st year dissertation (and thus having
a close approximation to spare time), I've been looking at Thunderbird
extensions in the last few days. As far as I can tell, there is a hidden
worldwide conspiracy to prevent the knowledge of how to write plugins
from being distributed. I have managed to navigate my way through a few
"hello world"-style programs, though.

For those who don't know, Thunderbird/Mozilla extensions are written in
~ XUL (XML User-interface Language) which is used by Mozilla to define
it's GUI. The application logic itself is, by default, written in
Javascript. You _can_ interface to other languages, but the whole
approach seems rather hacky.

I'll report back when I've decided on my chances of actually writing a
plugin. I don't have enough familiarity with the system yet to make an
informed decision. So, if anyone else wants to have a go then feel free
(I have not instantly fallen in love with XUL), or contact me if you
fancy teaming up.
