So the Debian upgrades are coming! We're been delayed and will push this
schedule back a week, here's the new schedule:
- 2025-Q2
- W14 (first week of April): default container image changed to
`trixie`, installer defaults changed and first tests in
production
- W19 (first week of May): Batch 1 upgrades, TPA machines
- W20 (second week of May): Batch 1 upgrades, Tails machines
- W23 (first week of June): Batch 2 upgrades, TPA machines
- W24 (second week of June): Batch 2 upgrades, Tails machines
- 2025-Q3 to Q4: Batch 3 upgrades
- 2026+: cleanup
The list of affected machine changed a bit: people added machines to the
first batch because they're enthusiastic about getting the new stuff!

We don't expect significant disruptions from this upgrade, but things
can break, for sure! We're already dealing with issues with backups, but
those should be resolved within the week, hopefully. See:

We're also switched installers to use trixie by default and updated our
upgrade procedure, which now features notable version number changes:

Finally, you should know that we've hit a snag in the PostgreSQL
database upgrade procedure: we've had to upgrade a few servers to
PostgreSQL 17 pre-emptively (weather-01 and polyanthum). Affected users
have been notified. For now, those servers are still scheduled in batch
2, but we can wrap them up in batch one if you want.
