You are right. "Evil" goverments can easily put up a server in any
country they want. I think that there's no or little point to exclude
nodes by country. Just watch what you're sending unencrypted via tor (or
via internet).

Yeah. Clear authentication isn't safe anywhere. I use cleartext
authentication only for some "must-register" websites. Encrypting
authentication has no point if rest of the communication is unencrypted.
