I get similar results here (Athlon 1200 with RedHat 7.2 and Enlightenment wm):
stdout 0.10 seconds
file 0.01 seconds
On a K6-III 400 (RH7.2 but no wm) I get:
stdout 0.18 seconds
file 0.05 seconds
