I built 1.8.0rc1 for python 2.5 without msvcrt dependencies and Micheal's test example works when the file is opened for binary read. As with Michael I'm willing to help as I use MinGW. But I've been hesitant to offer advice since I don't do an out-of-the-box pygame build.
