SDL_mixer can play midi on the streaming music channel. it must be read
from a file though, you cannot interactively create the music. (although
perhaps with some voodoo on a file-like object? not likely)
as of around SDL_mixer-1.2 you can now play native midi music on windows.
this means no more timidity needed.
