Not ported to Linux, though.

GIMP is very useful if you want to show how animations like banner ads are 
assembled.

For 3D animations, Blender (http://www.blender3d.org/) is unbeatable; although 
not as intuitive at first as some other similar apps, it is fast to learn and 
extremely powerful to use.

Both of the above are portable (Linux, Windows, Mac).
