Re: [school-discuss] Open Source CD distribution

Hi,
I am new and jumping in and this might be not a good answer....
I'm a 4-8th grade tech teacher who uses recycled machines run on Ubuntu 10.04 and Open Office. I have an install server put together for me by local Linux community. I do a fresh install on donated computers with all the programs I want in place.

If I had to re-install and re-install piece y piec3e it would not be sustainable..

Is that what you mean?

Would it make any sense for SchoolForge itself to produce CDs and/or DVDs based on SchoolForge's software list? Like many other FLOSS-related organizations already do, SchoolForge could offer the discs for sale to parties who want the convenience of a particular group of programs on a single disc and are able to pay a modest fee. With luck, it might even be a tiny fund-raising opportunity....

Any potential, or too much hassle?

Joel

Yes, good idea.   One great way to do this would be to get people to vote on packages that are listed on schoolforge.net.  Can someone come up with a way to motivate people to do some reviews and/or rating?  We need people to vote on software they know.  By using the rating system, you would also help us to begin learning how to improve it.  Laura and Justin have put in countless hours adding software -- you're missing out if you haven't had a look.  Oh, and if you tried a month ago and it was broken, it's fixed now.

This might take a bit of time, but what about creating a collection based on opinions here. For example, you yourself already know that LibreOffice is out there now... you could simply download that and place it on a CD along with other recommendations. Just a thought.

Cheers
